A West-facing porch, an east-facing tide.
Bethany Beach has a quiet rhythm. We built this rental around it — early light off the dunes, slow afternoons, the kind of evenings where dinner ends when the sun does.

How Serving Sand West came to be
A short history of the house at Bethany Beach — how we found it, what we changed, and why we stayed.
Serving Sand West began the way most good beach houses do — with a long weekend that wouldn't quit. We came to Bethany Beach in the spring of 2014, walked the boardwalk at low tide, and by Sunday had a list of reasons why we'd be back. Sea Colony's quiet, gated streets and that short, sandy walk to the ocean did the rest.
The house has been ours since 2016. We chose the West community for the trees, the tennis courts, and the easy shuttle to the private beach. It's a calmer, more residential pocket of the resort — the kind of place where you can hear cicadas at dusk and the porch screen door clap shut behind kids running back from the pool.
Year by year we've made it our own. New mattresses, a proper cook's kitchen, the outdoor shower we'd always wanted, a coat of paint that finally matched the dune grass. We open the house each spring and close it after Thanksgiving, and in between we share it with families who want what we wanted — somewhere unhurried, an easy walk to the sand, and a porch worth lingering on.
| Year | Event |
|---|---|
| 2014 | First visit to Bethany Beach. A long weekend in May at Sea Colony turns into a quiet promise to come back. |
| 2016 | Closed on the house in Sea Colony West, drawn to the wooded streets, the tennis pavilion, and the short shuttle to a private mile of beach. |
| 2018 | Full renovation of the kitchen and primary bath. White oak, soft brass, and a counter long enough for four people to make breakfast at once. |
| 2020 | Opened the house to guests. The first reservation was a family of six who left a note on the counter thanking us for the porch. |
| 2023 | Added the outdoor shower, refreshed the porch furniture, and gave the whole house a coat of paint matched to the color of dune grass at dusk. |
